Integrating Veterinary Medicine Into Shelter Systems
This course covered a wide variety of topics that are important to consider when involved in a veterinary team at a shelter. From shelter design to data collection and spays and neuters.
Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT)
For my final presentation topic, I chose to focus on Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor and its global distribution on dog populations. CTVT is particularly interesting because it is one of the only forms of tumors that are sexually transmissible. It results in the external growth of tumors mostly on the genitalia of a dog.

It is critical to be aware of CTVT’s presence and its transmission at HQHV spay and neuter clinics, specifically during relocation.
A lot of animals receive sterilization surgery and are then placed into a van for transport to a location that has a higher percentage of adoptions. During intake, before sterilization, all canines must be held in an organized, sanitary environment to reduce the risk of transmission.
