Behavior of Shelter Dogs and Cats
This course was very eye-opening in how shelter dogs and cats communicate with shelter professionals and potential adopters. Throughout the semester we discussed how to enhance animal behavioral health, managing common behavioral issues, and how behavior influences adoptions and retention.
Common Feline and Canine Behavioral Issues
In my final project, I chose to discuss feline inappropriate urination and canine jumpy/mouthy behaviors and how to remedy them upon the adoption of a new pet.

Feline Inappropriate Urination
Inappropriate urination occurs in cats upon many new adoptions and can signify several things. The number one concern when your cat is urinating outside the litter box is medical health. Sometimes complications with the urinary tract or other organs can cause discomfort in a cat and cause them to want to urinate in other areas.
This could also indicate that your cat just doesn’t like the shape of the box, type of litter, or area it is in. Try switching things up with the setup and look for change. Additionally, the cat could very likely be stressed about moving into a new home and be displaying their stress or desire to mark through inappropriate urination.
